Storing sensitive data securely with Synology

Synology’s innovative products provide enterprise, government and military clients with secure storage, offsite replication and near-immediate data recovery, and they are leading the way with their FlashStation securing Best Choice Award at Computex 2016 in Taipei.

Synology made an impressive entry into the all-flash array storage market last June, unveiling its FlashStation FS3017 and securing Best Choice Award at Computex 2016 in Taipei. Also showcased were surveillance applications, and a series of new NAS servers designed for SMBs to large enterprises such as the Synology RackStation RS18017xs+ and RackStation RS4017xs+, Synology’s 3U chassis 40 bay scalable NAS.

Synology’s innovative products provide enterprise, government and military clients with secure storage, offsite replication and near-immediate data recovery.

For organisations with big data requirements, Synology provides high performance best-value solutions
to protect and access that data with relative ease – anywhere, any time, and in near-real-time. Their aim is to provide an all-in-one functional solution for all deployments across their entire range.

The FlashStation took out the Best Choice Awards’ “Data Storage” category. Reviewed and selected by a committee of experts from the technology industry, academic community, media groups, and government, the award recognises distinctive products that set the future standard for the technology industry. Synology has been honoured with the accolade for six consecutive years.

“As more businesses see the benefits of using high-performance storage for virtualisation, database applications, big data analysis, video post-production, or other high-volume applications, demands for AFA will only continue to accelerate,” said James Chen, former CEO and current General Manager of the China Subsidiary of Synology Inc.

“We are delighted to showcase our first AFA at Computex, along with many other innovations in the networking, surveillance, and NAS area.”

FlashStation Storage

NAS, or Network Attached Storage, is more about ‘Network Application Storage’ to Synology. Storage on
the network is already a well-proven technology, and as we move toward the future it’s increasingly about what other
benefits or applications that storage devices can offer users.

Synology has built a reputation as a revolutionary in the NAS landscape, and now with its All-Flash storage solutions it’s poised to once again change the game.

FlashStation FS3017 is Synology’s new all-flash-array series dedicated to providing unparalleled data transfer speed. Delivering over 200,000 IOPS in 4K random writing with iSCSI over RDMA enabled, the Intel-Xeon based 72 bay system is scalable and affordable.

With the growing processing power of recent servers pushing the limits of 10Gb Ethernet, deploying 40Gb Ethernet adapters will allow businesses to take advantage of FlashStation’s ultra-high performance and eventually open the door to higher connectivity deployments.

To reach this level of performance, the technical specifications of FS3017 are the most impressive in Synology’s line-up: dual Intel Xeon processors, up to 24 drives (from mainstream SATA/SAS SSDs avoiding vendor lock-in), market leading support for 10/25/40GbE NIC, and the ability of scaling up to a maximum of 72 SSD.

The exciting introduction of the 40GbE connectivity option, will greatly benefit Synology customers running data centres, video editing firms, and other environments that require enormous data throughput capabilities. By pairing 40GbE support with the new all-flash solution, Synology brings one of the most competitively priced, high speed flash arrays to the market.

DiskStation Manager

To harness all of its power, the FS3017 is equipped with the award-winning NAS operating system, DiskStation Manager (DSM) – a proprietary OS for all Synology NAS. DSM provides next-generation data protection with its Snapshot Replication and Hyper-Backup features, which offer multi-version backup.

Virtual and Docker DSM technologies maximise virtualised resource allocation, and DSM’s more than one hundred features are easily accessible via a convenient user interface.

DSM is arguably the most comprehensive and advanced OS for NAS, used by millions around the world, and through its modular approach Synology is adding new applications and features at an accelerating rate.

The free back-up feature Snapshot Replication replicates 65,000+ backup copies to offsite Synology servers, bringing near-instantaneous data protection and ensuring data in shared folders or virtual machines in iSCSI LUNs remain available in the event of disaster. No more waiting a day or two for data to be restored, Snapshot gets it back within an hour or so.

“If you need close to real-time replication without breaking the bank, then this is it,” suggested Douglas Leung of VST, Synology’s New Zealand distributor. “We’ve been in the industry for 20 years, and we specialise in data storage, and over the years we’ve seen that a majority of the market is after a cost effective solution.”

“There are numerous storage solutions around, often out-of-budget and at premium cost, where the user will only benefit from a fraction of the features. This is where Synology steps in, offering a wide range of enterprise features at a fraction of the price. On top of that, as a New Zealand company we offer local representation and local support. There are no hidden costs and no more vendor lock-in.

Synology supports all major virtualisation solutions, such as VMware, Windows Hyper-V, and Citrix. In addition, support for VMware Site Recovery Manager allows for starting disaster recovery directly via VMware vCenter Server, simplifying the recovery process.

Apart from performance, some of Synology’s most attractive features is that it comes with an abundant array of comprehensive packages and periodic updates in the DSM at no additional cost.

Surveillance Station

For those seeking a powerful surveillance system, Synology’s Surveillance Station 8.0 features tools for creating an automated, integrated surveillance deployment, as well as a brand new Surveillance Station desktop client. When connected with I/O modules, Surveillance Station can serve as the central hub of various automation devices such as LED lights, electromagnetic locks, and motion detectors.

In addition, the desktop client allows users to access Surveillance Station exibly without needing to log
in via a web browser. Furthermore, the deployment with Synology Central Management System(CMS) is now optimised with support for QuickConnect and HTTPs and combined notifications.

Synology at a glance
